January Meeting

Happy New Year! Welcome back to a new year of paper and book arts...

The first PAG meeting of 2011, was held on Saturday, January 29 in Alumnae Hall. We started our gathering by discussing the status of the collaborative book project initiated in December. Our linoleum block designs are in various stages of production! Some members pulled test prints of their finished designs while others worked on perfecting nearly completed blocks.

The finished books will be a Japanese stab binding and will include poetry and 5X5 linoleum block prints designed and carved by PAG members. We also explored other book structures including a Paper Frame for A Book of Prints found in Fall 2010 edition of  "Bound & Lettered". This structure features a hard cover and instead of tipping in the prints, folded signatures act as frames to showcase artwork. The book would also utilize a Coptic binding to secure the signatures in place.

PaperNews:
The Bonefolder, an e-journal for the bookbinder and book artist released their January issue. Go to: http://www.philobiblon.com/bonefolder and download your free copy of the most widely read publication in the book arts. This month features The New Oriental Binding Structure along with informative articles and interviews.

Featured Paper Blog of the Month is Paper Forest at http://paperforest.blogspot.com/
Paper Forest has a smattering (yes, a hodge-podge) of paper awesomeness! For instance, who wouldn?t want a collection of paper art apps for their iPhone or iPad?

Robert Ives, a paper automata genius, is also featured on this blog along with a demo of his Paper Pendulum Butterfly Valentine!

Finally, the Paper Toy Monsters book. The author, Castleforte touts 50 fiendishly designed paper beasties with names like Confetti Eddie and Nom-Nom, providing the mad paper scientist (alive and well) in each of us with many hours of pleasure!

At the February meeting, members will continue working on their linoleum block designs, pulling test and final prints for our collaborative books and preparing to stab bind their collections.

There's still time! If you'd like to make history and take part in our first collaborative effort, please contact either Chimae Cupschalk or Jill Odegaard for additional information.

Members are welcome to share photos and information regarding events, activities, websites of interests or personal project details at our meeting or on our blog!

The next meeting will be February 26th at 10am-12pm in the Printmaking Studio, Alumnae Hall Room 107.
